Take Care of your Winter Skin

Cold dry air along with low humidity will cause your skin to dry out. When the air outside is cold and dry, the water in your skin evaporates more quickly; this makes your skin feel dry and tight, and makes it look flaky. In fact, your skin loses more than 25 percent of its ability to hold moisture in the winter.Windy weather (especially if you enjoy winter sports) can also beat down on your skin and make it look and feel dry and chapped. Some of my patients refer to this condition as "winter skin.” Of course, staying on your moisturizing game this time of year is crucial, but it’s also essential to keep exfoliation in your winter skincare routine.

When temperatures drop, your skincare routine should rise to the challenge.

Here’s why:

Exfoliation helps replenish skin.

Between the cold air outside and dry indoor heating, your skin cells dehydrate and die out faster in winter. You’ll want to buff away these dead cells so new cells can come in healthier and without obstruction. Twice a week should suffice.

Exfoliators improve the effectiveness of moisturizers.

Because you’ll be using extra lotion in the winter, you’ll want to maximize its power. Do this by exfoliating regularly: The dead cells block moisture from the layers of live skin cells that actually need it.

The solution: Protect your skin by wearing protective clothing, gloves, and scarves to shield it from the elements. Be sure to apply a rich moisturizing lotion such as our iS Clinical Moisturizing Complex which includes vitamin A, E, and Hyaluronic Acid. Another favorite moisturizer of mine is ZO Skin Health Hydrating Creme. It relieves symptoms of severely dry skin while calming skin to soothe visible irritation and replenishing skin's natural moisture to aid in skin recover. These products help hold moisture in your skin, and pay special attention to your hands, feet, elbows, and knees as well! If you’re looking for a good medical grade body moisturizer, our absolute fave is iS Clinica Youth Body Serum !! This refreshing lightweight serum mist gently absorbs into the skin providing powerful hydration and antioxidant protection against environmental aggressors. The purest form of Hyaluronic Acid, potent extracts of Watermelon, Blue Microalgae, Licorice Root and Holy Herb, are combined with essential Vitamin B5 with a proprietary Extremozymes® to create a unique and effective formula designed specifically for the body. Much more than a moisturizer, this nourishing treatment leaves skin feeling fresh, soft, and more hydrated. I personally use it daily!!!!

DIY Lip Scrub

1/4 tsp brown sugar

1/4 tsp honey

1/4 tsp coconut oil

lip balm

Prep: Hydrate and soften your lips first with a hydrating lip balm, like the multipurpose Aquaphor Healing Ointment.

Mix & Apply: Combine all three ingredients together until evenly blended. Then, gently spread a thick layer over your top and bottom lips. Despite the name, don't actually scrub. The goal here is to help your lips, not hurt them, and rubbing too hard can create micro-tears.

Remove: Leave the mixture on your lips for a few minutes (enough time for a quick scroll through Instagram), then gently wipe off with a wet washcloth. Again, no need to scrub. Immediately afterward, follow up with a hydrating lip balm or a nourishing lip mask to replenish your skin's moisture.
