Sun Protection 101: Essential Tips for Healthy Skin this Summer

What's the one thing that goes hand-in-hand with summer fun? Summer sun! From outdoor picnics and daytime hikes to beach-bumming and sporting events, this is the time of year you are most exposed to the sun's UV rays. While some summer sun exposure can be good (for stimulating Vitamin D and happy endorphins), there are risks involved. UNDERSTANDING THE SUN'S HARMFUL RAYS

Too much sun exposure can be detrimental to your skin, but do you know why? Let's begin by exploring exactly what makes the sun's rays harmful and what kind of damage they can cause.

The sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation can penetrate deep into unprotected skin and contribute to sunburn, wrinkles, and other negative outcomes. Here's an easy mnemonic device to understand the difference between the two most concerning types of UV rays:

  • Ultraviolet A (UVA) can Age the skin.

  • Ultraviolet B (UVB) can Burn the skin.

UVA rays are known to accelerate aging in the skin by breaking down collagen. Repeated exposure to UVA rays can result in wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and damage to the eyes. UVA rays can make it harder for your body to fight off illness by suppressing the body's immune system.

UVB rays are better known for causing sunburn, but they also contribute to photoaging. Excessive exposure to UVB rays damages skin cells, leading to DNA mutations and eventually leading to melanoma and other types of skin cancer.  The sun's UVB rays can also burn the corneas, leading to temporary loss of vision, known as snow blindness.

ESSENTIAL SUN PROTECTION TIPS

Keep your skin protected from the harmful effects of both UVA and UVB rays by following these helpful tips:

Use Sunscreen Daily

Regularly apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to any exposed skin at least 30 minutes before going outside, even on cloudy days. The FDA recommends reapplying every two hours or more frequently if you are swimming or sweating.

Limit Direct Exposure

Avoid direct sun exposure when you can, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV radiation is at its strongest. Seek shade during these peak sun hours.

Wear Protective Clothing

Along with sunscreen, it is smart to wear additional protection such as long-sleeved shirts and pants and wide-brimmed hats. Protect your eyes by investing in high-quality, polarized sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

Don't Forget Overlooked Areas

Many people forget that the skin on their lips is just as susceptible to burning and aging from UV rays. Apply a lip balm with SPF to keep your lips safe, and don't overlook other areas of skin like the tops of your ears.

ADDITIONAL WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN

Consider combining these other crucial steps to keep your skin protected during the summer months:

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is the best way to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. This is especially true on hot summer days when dehydration is most likely a factor.

Boost Your Skincare Routine

Your summertime skincare rituals should be rich in antioxidants, which help neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation. Talk to a trusted skincare professional about incorporating other hydrating skin treatments into your routine.

Understand Sunscreen

Familiarize yourself with the properties of physical and chemical sunscreens, and understand that there are limitations when it comes to protecting against sun damage. Do not use expired sunscreen; discontinue any sunscreens that irritate your skin or eyes.

IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR SKIN CHECKS AND PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

Even when you are using sunscreen daily, it is important to examine your skin regularly for signs of skin damage. It can often take decades for UV damage to develop into skin cancer, but if caught early it is entirely treatable. Look out for skin irregularities including new growths, changing moles, scaly patches, or sores that won't heal. If you notice any concerning developments, consult a dermatologist for personalized advice and guidance.

By remaining vigilant about your UV protection, you can take full advantage of the summer sun while enjoying healthy, youthful skin for years to come.
